Samsung Frame TV vs a $49 art USB: what you actually need
Separate the cost of a new television from the cost of its artwork, and choose a display approach that fits the screen you already own.
Published October 6, 2026 · The Family Gallery
Shopping for an art display becomes easier when you separate two decisions: do you need a new television, and how do you want to obtain its artwork? Samsung The Frame is hardware. Samsung Art Store is a content service. Family Gallery is a prepared physical USB collection for compatible screens.
If your television still works well
Check its USB photo player first. If it supports JPEG slideshows, the $49 Family Gallery USB may be enough to add classic paintings to the room. You keep your existing television, use its remote and control the slideshow through its own player.
| Option | Cost example | What you get | What you need |
|---|---|---|---|
| Samsung The Frame | $1,000+; 2026 55-inch model $1,199.99 | A television designed around Art Mode, a glare-reducing display and frame-style installation | A new TV purchase; optional accessories and paid art services may add cost |
| Samsung Art Store | About $5/month ($4.99 advertised) | Subscription access to Samsung’s changing art catalog | A supported Samsung TV, account and internet connection; hardware is separate |
| Family Gallery TV Art USB | $49 once | 1,000+ captioned classic paintings stored locally; no Family Gallery subscription or ads | An existing TV with USB JPEG slideshow support, or a compatible photo frame |
If the screen itself is part of the problem
A USB cannot change the TV’s finish, depth, mounting system or reflections. The Frame is designed around displaying art and offers display and installation features that ordinary televisions may not have. Those features are a reason to compare hardware if you were planning to replace the screen anyway.
If you already own The Frame
Art Store is not the only way to display images. Samsung documents importing personal photos with USB or SmartThings on supported models, and some free art is available. Check your model’s workflow before subscribing or buying a separate collection. Family Gallery is independent of Samsung; no affiliation or integration is implied.
What does the subscription comparison mean?
At the advertised $4.99 monthly rate, 12 monthly payments total $59.88 before tax or fees. An annual plan, promotion or included trial can cost differently. The subscription gives access to a changing catalog; the $49 USB provides a fixed local collection. Both still require a compatible screen, and the television’s electricity cost remains separate.
Comparison checked October 6, 2026. Samsung lists the 2026 55-inch Frame at $1,199.99; its September 2026 Art Store announcement quotes $4.99/month plus taxes and fees. Make a practical choice
List the features you actually need: a new display, a frame-like installation, a changing catalog, or simply captioned paintings on the TV already in the room. Then read the full comparison and test USB playback. That small check can prevent buying artwork your television cannot play.
